Chapter 13

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

“I didn’t start out trying to evangelize.”

Now as Samantha sat across from Ms. V., she could see the transformation that had begun on the inside of the young lady on that day two weeks ago. Samantha’s eyes were clear and full of the hope Ms. V. had seen in them during her freshman school year. Samantha’s clothing, though no longer baggy, was still on the more masculine side, but Ms. V. knew some scars resulting from body-shaming took longer to heal than others. There were no accessories or stylized curls in Samantha’s hair, but she’d opted for a natural look that wasn’t as severe. It fit her features nicely and made it look as though Samantha was coming out of hiding.

“How are you, Samantha?” Ms. V. asked as she situated herself at her desk.

“Good, Ms. V. I’m doing good. Ms. Rice and Mr. Mapleton let me turn my homework in late. Thank you for speaking to them.” Samantha went on and Ms. V. was happy to let her continue. The young lady’s animated speech was a balm to Ms. V.’s soul. “I won’t get full credit for them because that wouldn’t be fair to the other students, but since I can show proof of doing all of the work, I will only be docked one grade. I can still finish the semester with a B average.”

“Good for you. I’m very happy that you and your teachers were able to come up with a solution that worked for all of you. How is your family doing?” Ms. V. asked.

Samantha’s expression grew thoughtful. “It was pretty intense for a while there, but it’s much better now. Dad dismissed Minister Benson.” Samantha paused as she raised her eyebrows, giving Ms. V. a pointed look. “He didn’t call her out in public, but I’m sure the rumor mill is working overtime since no one knew she was leaving.” Samantha continued, before placing her thumbnail in her mouth then snatching it out quickly as if she’d been caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to be doing. “He’s scheduling sessions with all of the youth and their parents to see if she hurt them in any way. I wouldn’t want to be the one that had to do that, but Mom says it’s important to offer them the same opportunity to heal as you gave us.” Samantha finished with a smile.

“All I did was try and give you a safe environment to share your feelings,” said Ms. V. “It’s my job. I’m just thankful that we caught this when we did. You are a very brave young lady. It couldn’t have been easy for you to share with your parents what had been going on with Minister Benson. If you didn’t open up and speak to them during this session, it could have gone on for much longer and we don’t know how many children could have been impacted.
